About
I'm interested in and have studied the social, economic and cultural history of medieval villages, towns and cities, mainly in the Netherlands. At present I'm working on my thesis about the unique place within late medieval Holland society of a 'polder' south of Dordrecht which drowned in 1421-24 and was subsequently covered during 2 centuries by about 2 meters of sand and clay. Small parts of this Tieselenswaard have since the 90's been slowly rediscovered by our local archaeologists. I have also done research and written papers on such diverse subjects as the use of heraldry in placing the patrons of medieval mss, beggars in medieval and early-modern European and Dutch cities, the late-medieval civic house-interior, the New Harbour in Dordrecht, a Friesian feud in the late 15th century, Poulains in the kingdom of Jeruzalem, the oldest Flemish and Holland civic accounts and on by-laws about Dutch medieval civic hygiene. The last, my BA paper, has appeared in the magazine for medieval studies Millennium (Brepols, Turnhout, March 2009 (dated nr 1 of 2008)). It could be translated as 'The Dumping Ground Myth'. I've also given a paper at the Splendour of Burgundy Conference on May 13th, 2009, based on my BA paper about the Burgundian house interior, titled 'The Chamber of the Scribe'. It went very well and I have received compliments about it from such scholars as Prof. Eberhard König, emeritus of Freie Universität Berlin and Prof. James H. Marrow, emeritus professor of Princeton University. The paper will appear in the conference's proceedings in the fall or winter of 2009.
