About
In this thesis I argue that the four full-scale classical versions of the Hylas myth by Apollonius, Theocritus, Propertius and Valerius Flaccus, as well as the incomplete versions of Virgil and Statius, allegorically express the poetics of their respective poets. As will become clear in the course of the thesis, the individual metapoetical statements that these Hylas poems offer not only stand on their own, but also contribute to a diachronic debate that both extends and reinforces the metapoetical meaning of each individual poem.
