About

Home
My name is Rutger Claassen. I’m an Assistant Professor of Political Philosophy at the Institute of Political Science, at Leiden University.

My main work is in political philosophy. Until 2008, I’ve been writing my dissertation on the ‘limits of the market’; which deals with the question whether or not to all kinds of goods and services should be marketized. Since then, I’ve been interested in several topics. I have a continuing interest in the philosophical aspects of economic issues, like the trade-offs between labor and leisure, the provision of public goods, and the marketization of public services. Also I have been working on the capability approach as an approach to social justice, and on conceptions of personal autonomy underlying normative political theories.
